Springfield 1903 barrel markings
Dec 24, 2018 · Serial numbers for 1903 and 1903A3 stopped just short of 5,000,000, there is no Springfield (or Remington or Smith Corona) number 6001000. RA is Remington Arms. Remington made 1903s before developing the 1903A3 and their barrels were also used as replacements. Mark 2 is likely a Dayton Traister scope safety made to clear a scope. The Springfield armory was too busy making the M1 Garand rifle and did not have the capacity to manufacture both. The lack of ordnance stamp on the barrel would seem to mean that it is a commercial aftermarket barrel, they are/were available from the CMP. The stock lacks the finger grooves that the original 1903's came with.A short chat with Goofy leads me to believe it's a Springfield made my Rock Island. Funny thing is the barrel is stamped with "CAL .30/06" in a different font than rest of markings on receiver. The wrist of the stock is cracked-broken and I'd like to get a replacement. I can get measurements of screw holes and floor plate later.
