It's a 16 gauge, and the barrel serial number matches that on the receiver, 406897. It appears to be in good working condition, and hasn't been reblued.The earliest Take Down Model 1897 I have found thus far is serial number 48866 & 48870 and both were marked on the receiver and take down extension. The hard rubber butt plate was standard for the Brush Gun variation from day one of their production.The 1894 looks like it is at least that old, but only because of the discoloring of the steel, otherwise it doesn't look like a gun that has been used hard. As I mentioned in that post, it is a 30-30 wcf saddle ring carbine with the 20" round barrel, with a 5 digit serial number of 79019.
