The catacombs were created by tunneling into the volcanic tuff rock of the slopes of Capodimonte Hill in the Rione Sanita District. The catacombs were created from three existing burial sites each dedicated to a different saint – Saint Guadiosus, Saint Severus and Saint Januarius (Gennaro).
