Skolithos

Skolithos (formerly spelled Scolithus or Skolithus) is a common trace fossil ichnogenus that is, or was originally, an approximately vertical cylindrical burrow. It is produced by a variety of organisms in shallow marine environments globally and appear as lineated features in sedimentary rocks. Skolithos from Kraków am See, Germany.

Benthic burrowers are the major drivers of bioturbation, especially crustaceans and annelids for macrobenthos; ostracods, nematodes, and copepods for meiofauna. Bioturbation effects can extend up to 20 cm depth in the sediments.

Eight marine archetypal assemblages (Fig. 7.1) have so far been formally defined (Genise et al. 2000)—the Psilonichnus, Skolithos, Cruziana, Zoophycos, and Nereites that are usually arranged bathymetrically along the marine profile from coast to deep sea and Teredolites, Glossifungites and Trypanites ichnofacies (the latter being subdivided into the Gnathichnus and ...Skolithos is a facies-crossing trace fossil with a Phanerozoic range, and the ichnogenus most likely exemplifies behavioural convergence amongst a wide range of invertebrate tracemakers (Curran & Frey, 1977; Knaust, 2017; Knaust et al., 2018).Conichnus is a component of the Skolithos Ichnofacies and is commonly found in high energy environments with high sedimentation rates such as shorefaces, flood-tidal deltas, estuaries and tidal ...…

The Scoyenia Ichnofacies is characterized by a low diversity trace fossil assemblage, mainly simple horizontal fodinichnia (Scoyenia and Taenidium), with occasional vertical domichnia (Skolithos) and repichnia produced by insects or freshwater shrimps (Cruziana, Isopodichnus).Small incipient Skolithos offshoots (1-2 cm in length) were typical of insect larvae brooding areas, while adult insects created incipient Skolithos and Polykladichnus traces (Fig. 5D, F, G). Beetles commonly created slightly wider and deeper penetrating incipient Psilonichnus burrows, usually 5 cm or more in length and up to 1 cm in diameter.Skolithos in the Upper Cretaceous Cardium Formation: an ichnofossil example of opportunistic ecology.
