No, but it helps for getting some of the pearls. Some of the legacy hunts require lost souls to activate them. Lost souls are typically found in the DLC by farming the bosses in them. Redux makes a change where you can do overworld encounters for lost souls once you hit lv 40 and finish the game, but it's far too time consuming to feel worth …

Stab and Spells has some crazy dmg potential I reckon. Honestly made a nasty spell warden build with the idea of regeneration of ammo to keep procing sever the thread and war caster.
