I have a Garrett Arms Sharps type carbine in 45-70 caliber that is a real hoot to shoot. It looks much like the pictures you show above of your 1863 model, saddle ring and all. In muzzloaders, you never leave an airspace between the powder and the ball. The Sharps breech block has this huge empty chamber behind the gascheck plate.
