Yeah but armour doesn't do much on its own, every other skill does. For armour you are dependent on items. That's like saying that weapon skill doesn't do much on its own since it relies on a weapon. As it stands, Armor skill is much too easy to obtain, making most negative effects from armour negligible.
In colony ship you still need to specialize but other companions can help cover other technical skills. Don't worry too much and just enjoy your first run! The game is an absolute blast!
