At around 6:30 p.m. EDT, the only F5 tornado of the day was unleashed upon the cities of Newton Falls and Niles, Ohio in the Greater Youngstown area and then smashed into the small town of Wheatland, Pennsylvania across the state line.In the end, the infamous F5 cut a 47 mile swath through Newton Falls, Niles, and Hubbard before entering Pennsylvania. It was the only F5 in the U.S. in 1985, along with the deadliest Ohio tornado in 11 years. As part of a larger string of 41 tornadoes, it left 11 dead in Trumbull County alone.

There were four tornadoes that crossed the Ohio/Pennsylvania border. These will be explained next. The most violent tornado of the outbreak was a rare F5.
