On a 427, 454 or thicker 396, it just BARELY fits - there's around 1/4" or less between the cylinders. On a run-of-the-mill 396, that gap is a lot closer to 1/2". Have it sonic tested.Using a 396/427 crank with BBC rods is the better route to go; more cubic inches with better parts. Ross can build you pistons with whatever pin height and bore you need. Can you install a 4.00 inch crank into a 396 block and make a 427 out of it? Looks like if I bored the 396 .030 over to net a bore of 4.125 and then used the 4.00 inch crank you would net 427ci's. Take pi, multiply by 100, divide by all the cash in your wallet, send the money in your checking account to Shell and enjoy. Mileage will be somewhere between bad and real bad. The .030 over bore makes little difference in the mileage.The deal here is, you can sometimes get away w/making a 427 out of a 396/402- but the bore will be maxed out. If the engine block is cast as a 427 there will be room to overbore it, w/o risk of running out of wall thickness. You can also make a BBC 427 out of a 454 block by using a 396/402/427 (3.76" stroke) crank.
