Actually Lore-wise absorbing the soul is an "evil" action, cus destroying the jar means the soul ascends to the Hall of Echoes or whatever the afterlife is which is equivalent to you releasing them, whereas absorbing it means basically introducing them to oblivion or permanent deletion. Once you kill the 3 the first time, 2nd fight, just break the 3 soul jars and you get XP again for freeing them.
